On any night in
Sacramento: 2800 are homeless, 57% of those are sheltered, 43% are
unsheltered, 20% are families (including couples). Over the course
of a year in Sacramento up to 4,257 people in Sacramento experience
homelessness.
THE NEW FACE OF HOMELESSNESS:
The economic crisis has produced a new face of the homeless:
families and individuals displaced by job losses and the rise in
foreclosures. These are people that have never been homeless before
and are new to the social services system. In this economic climate,
these new homeless are not just the chronically homeless, they are
our former co-workers who were laid off and our former neighbors
that couldn’t make the rent or the mortgage. The new face of
homelessness in Sacramento looks like you or me and they need a
helping hand.
FROM SACRAMENTO MAYOR KEVIN JOHNSON:
Please join hundreds of Sacramentans engaged in a region-wide
initiative to end homelessness. This campaign—Sacramento Steps
Forward—is a call to join together to ensure that all Sacramentans
have a place to call home. Sacramento Steps Forward is a united
effort to find solutions to the complex and long-standing issues of
homelessness. Other cities and counties across the country have
tackled this problem. We have studied their lessons and know that
Sacramento can become an example of how a region can end
homelessness. You can help by contributing just one days rent or
mortgage payment to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation for
One Day to Prevent Homelessness.
Mayor Kevin Johnson is the Chair of the "Policy Board to End
Homelessness."
AN INNOVATIVE AND
PROVEN SOLUTION
“Housing First” is a cost-effective and proven strategy that focuses
on preventing homelesnesss. This solution prevents the near-homeless
from losing their homes and shortens the time homeless families and
individuals displaced by the economy spend in shelters. Support
services are provided to families and individuals to help rebuild
their lives as members of neighborhoods and communities rather than
from streets or shelters.
HOW IT WORKS
In Sacramento County, three HPRP providers (Salvation Army, Lutheran
Social Services, and Volunteers of America), were chosen to provide
four core HPRP component services:
1. Screening and Assessment 2. Financial Assistance
3. Housing Locator Services 4. Stabilization Services
A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU
Sacramento County has a Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing
Program (HPRP) that effectively employs a “Housing First” strategy
to prevent and curtail homelessness in the Sacramento Region. We now
have a one time opportunity to leverage the support of the federal
government and make a difference among the homeless populations in
Sacramento. For every $1 privately raised, we receive $4 in
emergency funds from the Federal Government. Our goal is to raise
$400,000 to receive $1.6 million, allowing up to 2,000 eligible
families and individuals to be served through the HPRP program in
Sacramento County. We Can Do This!
JUST ONE DAY . . .
If everyone gave just ONE DAY’s worth of their rent or mortgage
payment we would have enough to leverage the federal dollars and
support those less fortunate in our community. We have a real
opportunity to help thousands of families and individuals that will
be sleeping on the streets tonight. Will you consider being part of
this movement?
