mexicali

Located on the border of California and Mexico, Mexicali is a rapidly growing industrial city rooted in two cultures. This is a land of stark contrasts existing side by side. When you cross the border wages drop from $7.50 per hour to an average wage of $6 per day. Comfortable gated housing developments are squeezed up against homes built from wooden pallets and roofed with corrugated tar paper.

Most of the people you meet are not originally from here. They have come to find work in one of the dozens of factories that are the lifeblood of the city.

Ministry is challenging. People often hold two jobs or work as day laborers across the border, rising at 3:00am to make the crossing because they can earn more picking vegetables in California than working in the Fabricas (factories) of Mexicali.

For many years now Mexicali has provided an entry level cross-cultural experience for youth and adults from First Covenant Church.

Each trip is an opportunity to serve alongside our friends in Mexicali and learn from them about what it means to follow Jesus when life is hard.
